ink illustrations

my ink illustrations i started for my volcano ibook and website are in my sketchbook to see but i wasn't happy with the outcome of them. i used different mixed media to create a range of colours and textures but i didn't feel they reflected my designs well so i have chosen to keep my website and ibook with photos only. maybe when i come back to look over everything during crit i may add some in but as yet i'm not to sure.

Ibook development

for my Ibook i have been using bookry to add all my widgets and i have included

  • wordsearch
  • rebuild the image
  • youtube videos
  • spot the difference images
  • and web page links

i wanted to create an ibook that was visual exciting as well as being educational. the age range for the ibook was 16-19, so for students in education. all of my information on my ibook has been sourced from reputable website and also research websites. i have been documenting my progress in my skethchbook and i'm documenting the research for my website on my blog. i've nearly finished my ibook now as i wanted the rest of the time to focus on my website and get the help i need. I wanted to be more on top of my time managment this project as it is an important one and also because it is 2 projects mixed together. this way i have 3 weeks just for my website which i feel is enough time for me to compete, it has taken me about 2-3 weeks to complete my ibook the the standard i wanted it.

i made the background on illustrator and am going to use the same background on my website. i have also used the font choices i chose in my pitch and am going to keep them the same on my website. i really enjoyed learning to use ibooks author and i feel i have produced a good ibook that i am pleased with, and i feel it has been produced to a good standard to what the brief asks for. as the weeks go by and my website takes place i will most likely tweak a few things. i have also stuck to certain shades of colours and have used the hex codes to achieve this. my ibook flo's through the pages nicely and is clear and precise.

in my sketchbook it shows how i reached the final product and also notes on what i did and how.

website building

these are screenshots from the start of my website. i am using the same colour scheme as my ibook so both products are noticeably made by the same person. i've been concentrating on the nav mostly and getting the top navigation bar to go into a drop down menu when it gets to a certain size, now i'm trying to sort out how to make the navigation bar drop into a drop down bar earlier as i want to use this for the iPad as well as the mobile device. at the moment i haven't added any images or done the fonts i wanted to sort out the basic structure and the make sure the colours worked well and the border size were right. ill be doing screenshots of my websites progress so i can see what has worked and what hasn't

ink illustration designs so far

taking inspiration from Cherri Wood, I've started creating my volcano ink illustrations that are going to be on my website/ibook if they work. I've finished my Strombolian illustration and I used the Krakatau volcano as my inspiration. I've used a sponge to create falling ash effect and then used black ink, yellow paint and a red felt pen to create the lava from the volcano. I'm going to try using bleach over the ink to burn the black colour and give it that white/yellow look to the sprays of lava, because of how hot it is I want to re-create the right colours using mixed media.

Graphic Inspiration

                                                         Christina Drejenstam

these illustrations are what i want to achieve with my volcanic illustrations, i've done a few rough sketches all with different media, but ive yet to find the one that works the best. each volcano is going to have its own illustration and on the ibook the illustration will be interactive with small pop out's giving you more information and images. the ink used in these illustrations is very fine and the watercolour/ watered down acrylic works really well as a contrast.

My Dead Pony

these illustration's are similar to the top ones but they use typography integrated with the image which i think looks really effective. my favourite is the second image where the womens hair is being made out of typography.

David Despau

David despau is the designer of the illustrion now 3 book. he uses a mixture of drawing pencils,  ink and black ink pens. the bright colour he has used the in the wonder woman images work really well because he has only accentuated certain parts of the image. i think Despau has the best use of ink/oaint work.

development

the top image is the one i am basing my Ibook first page on. i like the illustrative style and its going to give me the chance to build on my illustrator skills. i've started my volcano first and also the lava flow. i've used a radial gradient on the volcano because i'm choosing to use a night sky theme. the gradient on the volcano is reflecting the lava flow where it is lighting up as it travels down the side of the volcano.  ive still got to add the explosive material, and i'm thinking of using my navigation buttons coming out of the volcano so you can click on them.

website inspiration

http://2012.buildconf.com

this is a website for a yearly web design convention in ireland. i like the simple 2/3 colour pallette and also the patterend banner that locks on the screen when you move down the page. the black banners at the top and the bottom of the page break down the red strip at the top of the page. i like the use of images as the navigation instead of just words and i would like to do this for my website and have the images of volcanoes as the navigation.

Logo Design

this is my finished logo for wonders of nature volcano. i wanted to keep my logo simple but also slightly different which is why only the lava has any colour, everything elce is greyscale. im happy with the final outcome, as i played around with different "ash clouds" but found the straight cloud looked the best.
