I've been looking at idents that have already been created with stop motion and there are some TV programmes that ave been used with stop motion. some of these have been used on TV and others are student/ peoples work that they have created for the channels. i really like the MTV one and this is one of my favourites using everyday objects to create the ident to a bass beat that all of the animation follows.
Latest TV spoke about maybe creating seasonal idents and looking at the bbc one at the top you can see this is a winter one using snowmen and there props. I'm not planning on using play dough as my top motion i was thinking more of an image that is moved around. maybe even using brighton landmarks as the backgrounds. Seagulls have been a re-occuirng theme in my emails and i am going to go with this theme for them.
I took some inspiraion from the apple 30 year birthday logo. when you refreshed the page it looked like the 3 and the apple are being hand drawn but quickly, it was over in about 1-2 seconds. i was thinking of a clean background and just as a short 1-2 second animation to have the latest tv logo being hand drawn on the screen and then flashing off. this is something i need to discuss with the client as this is a different style of animation and i am still uncertain as to what style they are happiest with.
A bird animation created using stop motion. this is quite an amateur stop motion but it shows the theme and style i want to pursue, trying to get hold of the client about what styles they are happy with is a lot harder.
i started looking into indents to find out what styles and animations they use. Firstly i came across these indents for BBC three. i love the moving shapes and the way the image moves to a sound or beat. the first one with the origami reminded me of seagulls and i felt this would be a good start for my indents. i want to create something quite clean, fresh and out of my comfort zone. The colours are very electro and use a limited colour palette 3 at the most. these are some of my favourite indents that i have seen.
These cute litre creatures are from MTV's indents. They look like worms that pop up and down and twirl around to create a trendy fresh new take on previously edited filmed indents. I like the way they have mashed bright colour with black and white to make certain elements stand out. The bright pop colours attract a younger audience and MTV is aimed at music and these worms move to a beat of music. The target audience for MTV is 16-30 so there indents will be more colourful, trendy and young compared to BBC 2 as seen below.
These are idents form the BBC through the years and it shows how idents have come along and what sort of element have been used to create these icon pieces of television. Some of the idents are very simple with just small elements but i think this works and is really effective, it keeps the viewer watching as they aren't sure what is going to happen next. you can also see how well indents have come along since the first were broadcast. one thing i have noticed is that not many of them uses loads of colour they keep it simple with a few main colours/ pop colours.
these are some idents from ITV and a lot of them are the most recent. They had eased more film and photography and have animated it that way instead of creating an animation on screen. Their idents have to relate to an older audience ( a more grown up audience) and their idents reflect this. The itv logo is a large size on the screen so you know way channel you are watching, also they match the ident colours to the colours on the logo, if you watch ITV you will notice most of the idents have a main colur of yellow to match the logo.
these are some idents from MTV again. you can see the difference in style when you look at the animation they use compared to ITV or BBC. you can see how the target audience affects the whole design you are using, especially colours and animation styles. digital natives expect to see animation like this so when they see the idents on ITV and BBC they aren't impressed. Looking through different idents i have realised that i need to look further into the target audience for latest TV which will help me to design for that person.
These nickelodeon idents are some of my favourite as the mix digital and photography and they work really well. I particularly like the carrots and rabbit one. the animation is really simple but it is also really clever. the carrots moving look like stop motion and the character is a different art style, being unite boxy like shapes placed together. i want to create something using this style, although i need to be in contact with Val and Diana to see if they agree with this design.
this video shows the BBC idents form the beginning to now. its good to be able to look back and see what the design was at the time and how i could make use the designs from the past re-invent them and use them now. design always comes back into fashion and its about finding the design that is going to be popular and work well for the audience
After Dianna and Val had suggested they want a seagull theme and Dianna has sent us seagull music made on the guitar i felt the best thing to do would be to look at seagulls particularly there behaviour and how i could incorporate that into doing something animated with the birds. these are some facts i found out:
medium to large birds
grey, white, black
harsh wailing, squeaking calls
longish bills, webbed feet
most are ground nesting carnivores which will take food or scavenge opportunistically
crabs and small fish
unhinging jaws which allow them to costume large prey
most are coastal or inland rarely venturing out to sea
up to 4 years to attain full adult plumage, but 2 years is typical for small gulls
large white headed gulls are typically love lived birds with a maximum age of 49 years recorded
nest in large densely packed noisy colonies
lay 2-3 speckled eggs in nests
the young are precocial being born with dark mottle down and mobile upon hatching
complex methods of communication and a highly developed social structure
display mobbing behaviour, attacking and harassing would be predators and other intruders
no gull is a single prey specialist
prey can be obtained in the air, on land or on water
gulls are monogamous
divorce of mated pairs does occur but it apparently has a social cost that persists for a number of years after the break up
most gulls breed once a year and have predictable breeding seasons lasting three to five months
exsiting pairs re-establish their pair-bonds and unpaired birds begin courting
nest are usually built on the ground
I also found out that the seagulls we have over on the south east cost are called european gulls.
We have been set out new brief to work with latest TV to create title sequences, indents ad stings for their TV channel which will be going live in june/july time. i have been given the indents to look at and create. the brief that Latest have given me says:
Channel Idents/Stings:Duration 110 seconds. Branded Latest TV interstitials still or with movement to
use as break bumpers and between. Stand out stuff that say who we are. Perhaps changing with the
seasons or months and/or to account for whatever is going on in the city or on the channel. Channel 4 do
the 4 things they brand the channel. After reading this is was a bit confused as to what they really wanted in detail as this brief really was brief! after getting a few emails from val and Dianna they have suggested that they would live a seagull theme for their indents as they feel seagulls are distinctive to brighton. I personally do not find this to be the case as you find seagulls over the whole of the births isles, but you can't tell the client that! I also find seagulls quite uninspiring and boring. but i have been doing some sketches and some research into seagulls.
these are what my edited pieces look like after crit. i have played around with the font and i have gone for a whole new font although called "learning curve" i am really pleased with the outcome and i feel the font works better and i prefer the brighter pink colour on its own rather than having a paler pink behind too. i'm thinking of chaining the give the gift one and having "of oasis" smaller at the bottom to match the other 3 posters so they all have the same consecutive theme.
these are my final pieces that i showed at crit. the majority of the comments were positive saying how they linked the ink style and the social media worked particularly well.
some of the changes that people mentioned where
type (using the same font throughout every piece)
the ink splatters changing in opacity
the card machine was read as a phone to some people although i don't agree with that and i'm happy with the way it came out.
overall the comments where positive and i feel confident that i have produced the work required by the brief.
these are screenshots of my final pieces that are near competition. i am really happy with the quality and the design that has gone in to them and i feel i have stuck to the brief well. i have a few niggles and i keep editing little problems with them but once we have done crit then i can get the class's opinion and play around a bit more.
