show meeting 1

during our meeting about planning the show we started to draw up all of the details we would need to fulfil. firstly there was only a few of us in the classroom so trying to decide what needed doing with only a few brains was tricky but we managed it and the rest of the class turned up in drips and drabs.  once everyone was there we decided we need to get into groups to figure out who was going to be in charge of what. i volunteered myself to be in charge or sorting out the guest list and sorting out invitations. i will be looking into design agencies around brighton/lewes and eastbourne area. Andrew made it clear to us when we were sorting out our planning sheets that we needed to sort the money for the shows and sort our budgets for everything first as obviously this is going to be one of the most important parts. we have a rough etiolate of around £50 per student so far. 

new brief

Today we have been set our new brief to self organise our final year show for us and the 3rd year students. i don't know how this is going to work because the 3rd years are going to have a separate brief so we won't be able to sort things out with them we will have to do the majority ourselves and wait till they have finished their brief before we can change/discuss anything. This is going to be a good opportunity to decide how we want our final show to look and we have to come up with a name, theme, everything. its going to be held at the brighton media centre so we will need to pay the deposit for that asap. 

unfinished ident

on my final ident i haven't finished completely due to client changes, i have uploaded this to herclues in a folder saying that its unfinished because i have client changes to make. I've spoken to val about this and she was happy for me to finish it after the deadline date and send it to her afterwards. i was worried adding this piece of work in would affect my grade but after speaking to george he said to show the difference that it is an unfinished piece of work because of the client changes i need to make and it wouldn't affect my grade for the project. i have also decided to add this note into my blogger as another form of saying how its not done yet. 

communication

For my communication evidence with Val and Diana i have made up a word document showing all of the emails we have exchanged. i thought this would be easier that showing all of them in my blog and that way all of the emails are in chronological order. 

ident 1 & 2

these are 2 of the idents i have created for latest tv. these are the rough videos and all the final tweaks have been made i just haven't rendered them out yet just incase latest decide their is something else they want to change. i am really pleased with the way these have come out and t has also helped me to further my knowledge into AE. i have thoroughly enjoyed working on these although working with clients has been eventful at times, especially when we dint agree on things but as the designer i have to respect their decisions and make the changes for them. 1 of my niggles with latest was trying to get logos, and finished music for the idents, especially as they are getting all of this free work you wold expect them to make the most of it and to have the small details ready for us to work with. Overall Val and Diana seem very pleased with what i have designed for them so that is a positive. 

I don't know if i would work with latest TV again as i have found some of their communication to be difficult to receive and also some feedback has been on a different subject so this makes things confusing. Val has tried to keep in regular contact though and along the way i have made sure i have let her know with updates, colour schemes, what logos to use. i have sent videos and images for val to see and overall this seems to of been a great way to send the information. 

final ident

This was my final ident that i have created for latest. After speak to val about it we decided that the logo needed to be moved down and also the wings still need adjusting ( i did know about this prior to sending her this rough movie) Val was really pleased with the colour scheme and the way the idents all had an overriding theme and they linked together nicely. I changed the music so that the start and end would fade out nicely. i think my longest indent is 8 seconds and the shortest is 6. I emailed the same video to Diana who replied with an email that was nothing to do with this video in particular but asking me to start designing something new, obviously it is way to late for me to start something new. i haven't replied to the email yet as i am unsure of what to say so i am going to ask george/andrew for their opinion on the best way to work around it. i have found working with clients quite difficult and its hard to not fall into  a pattern of just doing your own work instead of doing exactly what your client wants, obviously i can suggest different themes and design ideas but at the end of the day i'm not the one who is going to be using the work. 

feedback

i got some feedback from val about my newest ident and she seemed pleased with it the only changes she talked about where 

• taking away the zoom on the logo
• moving the logo down to give the bird more room to fly

obviously the wings are still quite clunky and this is something i still need to work on but overall she seems happy, I'm just waiting for feedback from Diana to see what her opinions are. 

My other indents are basically finished with just a few minor tweaks to be made. and i have got my storyboards and work in my sketchbook. 

ident 3

going through what i have spoken to Diana and Val about i came up with the idea to create this ident with the seagull flying as they wanted me to edit the other ident i had created to make it fly and i thought this would be easier to create a new one. i kept the same sky background as i felt this has helped to brand the channel instead of mixing the colour schemes, and i have used their latest TV logo as the branding logo. the seagull fly's over the top of the logo and then the logo zooms in and then pings back out. I Wanted to keep the simple theme for the idents as i felt this works really well to flow nicely into the next programme. I have empaled val and Diana this new piece and am awaiting their feedback. I created the seagull in illustrator and it is the same one that i have used on my other idents. the wings are being moved my positioning, Scaling and opacity and i have been having some trouble with getting the wings to move freely together and to look smooth, i'm still working on this problem to make sure that they fit properly and they look realistic. i have kept the seagull black to create the illusion of a seagull silhouette. 

ident 3 work

this is the bird i created for my 3rd ident. i wanted to wings to move to make it look like it was flying. i did this is Illustrator. i took the original bird image i have a separated the parts but keeping the wing together. this way the wings would always move in unison and one wouldn't end up higher than the other. Val seemed very happy with this one and i just have to make sure the wings look like the are flying smoothly and they look realistic. i have still kept the same black silhouette for the bird as i felt this enhanced the colours scheme and your main focus is still on their logo. i said have a lot of fun trying to get the birds wings to flap and although it has proven to be more difficult that i first thought it would be i am pleased with they way it is turning out. 

this is what the bird with the wings looks like on the AE file. i think the wings form in just the right places and do look realistic to a flying bird. my one niggle is just getting the wings to stay in the same place when they are "flying" as the wings sometimes are just off to the body. this is something i need to keep working on and even think about using a motion blur. 

emails

these are some emails i have been exchanging with diana today about the idents and the music. some of the points that have been raised are 

• different music

• faster drawn on bird

• maybe the bird flying away

• keeping the length a good viewing length and long enough to talk over

Also diana has asked me to try and create an index with footage she is going to send me and she ants me to change the footage to a cartoon style and have the guitar playing at the same time as the music. this will not be done in time for deadline and it is bait late now for me to start playing around with ideas but i have suggested she send me to footage and i can have a play around to see if it is feesable. i'm waiting for the footage from Diana as i can't do anything without it. 

changes

After speaking to val about my work and she suggested changing the red background and keeping the sky theme as this is more pleasing to the eye. i think she was right about this and we have spoke about keeping the sky theme as it's neutral and the colours flow nicely into the next programmes opening titles. 

I've spoke not diana about getting the final piece of music and she is still working on that so for the moment i just have garage band sound on them. 

I'm just tweaking all the finishing touches at the moment making sure everything is ready for submission and hopefully the clients are going to be happy. 

email feedback

i emailed val today to show how how my indents are coming along and she seemed really pleased with what i had created and said they looked very professional! 

i was very happy with the comment i had received from her and the only changes she said was to change the red background to the sky background which i have now done. i do think they sky breaks down the red in the idents and does look good! i have a few changes i still need to make on my idents so they are finessed properly and  i just need to re-create some storyboards so they match what i have produced. 

background colours

after showing val to idents with different background colours she said she preferred the sky background as the red can be to harsh on big screens and a lot of red can hurt your eyes when you are watching this. idid agree with her on this and after changing the ident with the red background to the sky background i do feel this works a lot better. Staying with the seagull theme i suppose the sky theme makes more sense too, also the colours are quite neutral so you can place any other colours on top although i have stuck to the colours in the logo. which val was happy about.

colour matching

i notices on one of my animations that the red is slightly off for the channel 8 logo and as i didn't have any details on the exact colours ( i did email about this) and received nothing back i went into AI and used to dropper tool to match the colours, on the animation you can't notice the red triangle bing different to the background anymore. 

i have only created 2 idents so far but i have used both of the logos in them so that Latest have the choice of what they wish to use. 

logos

Val and the team haven't been that helpful with meeting deadlines for us and oe of the issues we had with the idents was having the logos in PNG form instead of just using them off of their website of screenshot. val finally answered to dan who then sent me the logos and i was able to continue working on my idents. so far i have created 4 idents with different themes but keeping a simple colour choice as the programmes are very detailed i wanted to keep the idents simple to the eye! 

emails

Val doesn't seem to have mush of an opinion on what she is after for the idents. her main answer seems to be do what you think is best and then once i have sent my work for her to look at and give feedback on she doesn't really seem to have an answer. the feedback I'm getting is vague and not very helpful. I don't want to continue doing any work for them after this project as it has just been a bit of a nightmare. Diana sent an email 2 weeks ago saying the music will be ready the next day i'm am still to get this and have been chasing her for it. most email replies seem to be a silly hours in the morning so i really don't know what they are doing during the day!

AI work

this is the seagull  created in illustrator for my idents, i wanted to use a simple outline of a seagull and keeping the black/ red theme of the logo i thought a black seagull would look good. i used to pen tool to create it and i did add feet but these looked odd so i decided it would be a flying seagull and they have their feet tucked under so the feet are not visible. 

I do like the way to seagull has turned out and feel it matches the idents theme well. 

simple animation

i have taken most of my inspiration from the apple animations and the way they create clean, tidy lines but the work always looks interesting. i think this fits well with the brand. i have gone for my colour in my designs compared to apple who mainly stick to greyscale. i love the way they have used lots of smaller shapes to create one big shape and they have added there phrases into the work so it makes sense what is being made in front of you on the screen. 

ident 2

This is another ident i have created using a ball idea, i looked closely at the number 8 and wondered what i could do the enhance the shapes and characters of the shape so i thought a que and ball would look good. i been working mostly on the position and the scale to get all of the shapes in the correct places so they flow nicely. I'm still working on making the line at the beginning look like a sue hitting a ball. Obviously you get the number 8 ball so that also inspired me to go with this theme and i think it still flows nicely with the clean graphic element i chose to pursue on the seagull themed ident. i background colour needs tweaking to the same red as the logo, but this i can do after i am happy all of the elements work together. 

Trying to get in contact with the clients has been slightly harder waiting for replies, so wondering what to do and if they are even going to like it. 

with my seagull ident val had said that a white background can look to much on a big screen which is why i then went with the sky theme but i haven't heard back about a red background or if they would prefer black maybe? 
i will try different colours to see what i feel matches the best but at the moment i do really like the red, and the white ball is large enough to brake that down. 

further work

this is a further working from the seagull ident i done. i went with a drawn on effect for the seagull, using a rough charcoal brush stroke to create that hand rendered feel. i then chose to fade the channel 8 logo inwards. with my idents, i have made it so you can brand either channel 8 or latest tv on them so they can swap between what they are advertising. like channel 4 brands the number 4, they can brand the number 8! 

i chose to use a sky for the background as i felt this brook down the white and is a lot softer to view and breaks down the colours in the logo and the bird. 

seagull ident

going with the seagull theme i chose to use a seagull and mix that with the latest tv logo, i'm still waiting for a pdf version of their logo as the one i have used is just a screenshot so the quality isn't that good! i wanted to create a clean look, an ident that could be extended so the speaker could talk over and introduce the next programme. i chose to keep the bird black to contrast with their logo. maybe a newer version of the ident could have the bird flying?

this is how the bird and the logo look together on the ident, i think this looks really clean and fresh, and I'm really happy with it. i made the bird image in illustrator but had to save it out as a photoshop document for the pdf to work in AE. this is just showing my working in AE and how i created this.
